Nanjing & Beyond: Healing the Harms of Japanese Imperialism
Nanjing & Beyond: Healing the Harms of Japanese Imperialism
The Foundation for Chinese Dignity supported an event organized by members of the Vancouver Chinatown community to commemorate the Nanjing Massacre, which began 88 years ago from Saturday, December 13, 1937. The event highlighted the harms of Japanese imperialism and its direct and intergenerational impacts on seniors and on descendants of communities across Asia and the Asia-Pacific, including many who are part of Chinatowns today. The purpose of the gathering was to create space for collective memory and reflection, not only on loss, but also on resistance.

Our Approach
We developed a bilingual zine that was distributed at the vigil. The goal of the zine is to provide information about the extent of occupation under Japanese imperialism and, more importantly, to record and remember the acts of resistance by Indigenous peoples in the occupied territories.
It seeks to recenter narratives around the people of those places, recognizing that they were not passive victims of Japanese imperialism, but active resisters who asserted agency in the face of occupation.

Resources
We welcome you to download, print and distribute the zine for educational purposes. The zine is best printed on legal (8.5" x 14") paper. Instructions on how to assemble to zine can be viewed here.
